Match a Song to a Book

I had this idea of matching books to songs because I love both :”)

The way I matched them is sometimes based on the vibes or lyrics or meaning of either. Or songs that just remind me of certain books. I really liked doing this for my reviews (my upcoming scheduled reviews include these now) so I thought I would do a separate segment for these. Don’t worry, there is nothing spoiler-y about this… for any of the books 😉 I got you guys.

I am probably not the first blogger to do something like this but I did not base/copy this post and format on anyone else so it’s kind of an original here.

I also definitely recommend the songs that I match to get you into the mood of reading the specific books they are matched with.

Book Match

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

Song Mood

If I Can’t Love Her by Terrence Mann

This is the book that initially inspired this post/segment. The vibes for the first one if a “dark” and “longing” vibe. It helps that the Book Match is a Beauty and the Beast Retelling and the Song Match is from the original musical playlist.

Song Quote: “Hope I could have loved her and that she’d set me free. But it’s not to be, If I can’t love her. Let the world be done with me.”

Book Match

The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

Song Mood

Baby It’s Cold Outside by Idina Menzel, Michael Bublé
White Christmas by George Ezra

I have two matches because this book gives me two different vibes. I’m trying to not spoil anything but the “romance” in here really gives me that back and forth between the two singers in the duet for “Baby It’s Cold Outside”. There is also a very nostalgic feeling all throughout the story and the plot is set around Christmas (for the most part) so I think George Ezra’s version of the classic “White Christmas” is perfect. Both the book and the song is a modern take on a classic tale/song.

Song Quote: “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas, Just like the ones I used to know.”

Book Match

They Both Die At the End by Adam Silvera

Song Mood

One Day At A Time by Sam Smith

If you guys didn’t already know, this book is about two guys who meet each other after they are both notified that they are about to die soon. This is probably one of the most interesting premises I have ever read in my life and it is one of my favourite books of all time. I think Sam Smith’s “One Day At A Time” is perfect mood for this book. The lyrics also go PERFECTLY 😉 I feel like crying when I was listening to this and thinking of this book… my heart you guys…

Song Quote: “you are sworn to your faith. but we got everything we need baby, and the memories we made, in a world of reinventions, it’s never too late.”

Book Match

The One (The Selection, #3) by Kiera Cass

Song Mood

I Can’t Make You Love Me by Shane Filan
The Good Parts by Andy Grammer

The “Selection” series is probably one of my favourite guilty pleasures. Essentially, is is about a group of girls trying to win over the prince but, of course, our main girl loves someone else and was practically forced to join the competition. There is a lot more to the story but, again, we’re spoiler-free here. This is the third book in the series that I am matching because I feel like both of these songs can probably be the theme songs if ever there is a movie/series adaptation to this series (which I think would be great). Both songs give this longing-for-your-love vibes which I think matches all the romantic relationships in this series. The songs also give that castle-esque and classic romance mood, in my opinion.

Song Quote (I Can’t Make You Love Me): “I’ll close my eyes, then I won’t see, The love you don’t feel when you’re holding me, Morning will come and I’ll do what’s right”

Song Quote (The Good Parts): “And I love the castle that you have built
But I am asking still to let down the walls”

Book Match

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

Song Mood

Your Song by Elton John

It has been some time since I’ve read Maybe Someday but until now it makes me tear up a bit thinking about it. The guy is a musician and a composer and I think “Your Song” by Elton John is a perfect mood before you start reading the book. This is a New Adult Romance to be clear. Colleen Hoover’s romance stories have always been one of my favourites. Her writing is so addicting and she always finds a way to make you fall in love with the characters themselves. I also like how she doesn’t forget the plot of her books and makes it just as engaging to read.

Song Quote: “My gift is my song, And this one’s for you”

Book Match

The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand

Song Mood

Daniel by Sam Smith (Orig: Elton John)

I think this might be one of my favourite matches on this list. Overall, the mood of both the song and the book is dark. They are both about missing someone who has gone and passed. It also seems perfect that the lyrics says “my brother” and in the book, the main character’s brother passed away (not a spoiler).

Song Quote: “Lord I miss Daniel
Oh I miss him so much
Oh, Daniel my brother”

Book Match

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Song Mood

Somebody To Love by Queen
Your Song by Lady Gaga (Orig. Elton John)

Another match that I’m really proud of. Aside from the fact that the book is about a rock band and Queen is mostly a “rock” band… I think that the song really gives me the same old-rock vibe that Daisy Jones & The Six does. Your Song (Lady Gage version) also seems like a song that I can hear Daisy singing :”) I’m just in love with this match you guys have no idea.

Song Quote (Somebody To Love): “I ain’t gonna face no defeat (yeah yeah)
I just gotta get out of this prison cell”

Song Quote (Your Song): “I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is, now you’re in the world”
