I really like doing these kinds of recommendations posts by pairing books that I have read and loved :”) All of these book pairs can be considered recommendations in a vice-versa situation.
— MAIN SQUAD AND OVERALL VIBE —
OMG guys… Sorcery of Thorns is practically the whole Infernal Devices series in one book. The victorian vibe is there, the magic, a bit of mystery, and (most importantly) the dynamic between the 3 main characters is to LIVE for!! I honestly think that even if you haven’t read any of Cassandra Clare’s book or The Infernal Devices you should still read Sorcery of Thorns. The character dynamics are honestly me favourite thing ❤ Silas reminded me of Jem with his silver, ethereal beauty. Nathaniel reminded me of Will with his humor, sass, and broody banter with Elisabeth. Elisabeth reminded me of Tessa with how naive they both were at the beginning but they both just grow into themselves by the end. Clockwork Princess (third book of The Infernal Devices) and Sorcery of Thorns also have both of the best endings and epilogues that I have ever read in my entire life.
— HISTORICAL HUMOR —
These are actually historical fictions but they both have a touch of magical realism in the story so I still consider them fantasy (albeit low-fantasy). They are also both very humorous and have very similar atmospheres. If you want to read something under historical fiction that is not too serious but still tackles great themes, I recommend both of these.
— DARKER RETELLINGS—
They’re both dark… they’re both retellings… they’re both original… they’re both good books
— OVERALL VIBE AND HEIST —
If you are looking for a fantasy read that involve a heist with people like the Grisha with their powers then The Last Magician is a series you should definitely try (and it involves time travel)!! The world itself reminds me of the atmosphere that Six of Crows gives and Dolph Saunders is practically and older Kaz Brekker.
— SPACE FIGHTER PILOTS AND PILOT SCHOOL —
I read and watched Ender’s Game when I was much younger and I recently read Skyward and LOVED both!! I have never read any other books that are so similar and I wish that I could find more books about space pilots that fight in outer space (comment below if you know any books) because they just interest me so much. Both of these are so well written and Skyward is like the sister of Ender’s Game. I can’t recall a lot of the writing style of Ender’s Game but the space battles in Skyward are written so well that it feels like you are actually there. The world-building for both books are also very well done that I was left so hooked and needing more.
— POST APOCALYPTIC-ESQUE ROADTRIP —
The Darkest Minds series wasn’t the most engrossing story for me because the series just strayed so far from the reasons that I loved the first book. It became more generic and I lost interest. Nevertheless, the road trip was my favourite part of the first book and the characters in Dry go through a similar post-apocalyptic kind of road trip.
— CARNIVAL —
I am mostly matching these of how they are both about Carnivals. But Caraval is more magical and Daughter of the Burning City is a bit on the darker side.
— COMPETITION AND STAR-CROSSED LOVERS —
Scythe is actually Sci-Fi and The Crown’s Game is more on the high fantasy side. But they both have the star-crossed lovers thing going on as they are both pit against each other and whoever loses will die.
— OVERALL VIBE AND HEIST —
The Last Magician and Ace of Shades have a very similar direction in their plotlines. They do have very similar overall vibes.
— FEMALE ASSASSINS —
Truth be told: I prefer The Nevernight Chronicles to The Throne of Glass series but I think in terms of that dark assassin theme, they’re similar. Throne of Glass does go down that fairy tale road as the books go on while Nevernight is more consistent on that dark assassin thing. They both do have very unique worlds so if Throne of Glass even mildly interested you, I would recommend trying out Nevernight.
